It is a plucked string instrument that is native to the Northern Himalayan region, including Nepal, Tibet, Sikkim, and Bhutan. The instrument is carved from a single piece of wood, with a hollow body covered in stretched animal skin that serves as the sound-box. The bridge sits on the animal skin, and four strings are anchored to the keys and body at both ends, with the bridge acting as a cantilever to maintain string tension.
The Tungna is traditionally played by the Tamang, Sherpa, and Gurung people in Nepal, during auspicious occasions, gatherings, and festivals. The musicians often compose their own songs, which are sung while playing the Tungna, especially during the New Year or harvest season. It is a popular instrument in this region, with many households owning at least one Tungna.
