Bodhichitta is a central concept in Buddhism that refers to the mind of enlightenment. It is understood as a compassionate mindset that seeks to alleviate the suffering of all living beings and to achieve enlightenment for the benefit of all. The practice of bodhichitta involves developing this compassionate mindset through self-reflection, prayer, and chanting. This can lead to the development of inner peace and happiness, as well as the ability to help others.
The strength of one's bodhicitta mala, or prayer beads, is said to depend on the power of one's compassion. The practice of exchanging oneself with others is believed to lead to the development of a deeper and more profound love, which in turn leads to the cultivation of bodhicitta. This compassionate mind is considered the very essence of a Bodhisattva's training.
Bodhichitta is also associated with the bodhi tree, a species of fig tree believed to have been the tree under which the Buddha attained enlightenment. The tree symbolizes the potential for enlightenment within all living beings, and its green beads and flowers are often used in the making of bodhichitta malas. Bodhichitta is considered the highest quality that can be developed in oneself and is said to be the source of true happiness.
